FILM REVIEW - JOJO RABBIT
While 'Jojo Rabbit' is undoubtedly my least favourite film in Taika Waititi's filmography, it's a rather irrelevant factor, seeing as the man has arguably never had a misstep, and the film is... well... bloody beautiful.
In a world overrun by keyboard warriors, excessive censorship, and hypersensitive responses, 'Jojo Rabbit' technically shouldn't work, but it truly does. It is nothing less than "Bold" in every sense of the word, capturing the rather traumatic and subtle implications of a time long gone, in a way that energetically respects its subject matter, yet subverts all implications of racism, hate, and bigotry (that without being helmed by Waititi himself, may've been unintentionally evident).
Unfortunately, despite the film's incredible energy, it felt rather unsatisfying to me, and I'm not really sure why... It might have a lot to do with the transition from comedy to drama, that was evidently way smoother in his other films (eg. Boy, Hunt For The Wilderpeople), but due to the films subject matter, I feel it was done in the best way it possibly could've been, so it may just be me on this one lol.
Overall, although I do understand people's gripes about the reminiscent nature of 'Moonrise Kingdom' and other Wes Anderson esque vibes (eg. the quirky nature, the cinematography in some areas, etc), any individual that is aware of not just the iconic staples of Kiwi/Maori/New Zealand cinema art, but Taika's whole filmography, will understand that those comparisons are nothing more than just that, COMPARISONS.
THIS FILM WON AN OSCAR TOO! FOR POLY KIDS LIKE ME, THIS MAKES ANYTHING SEEM POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!
I wonder what his next film after 'Thor: Love and Thunder' will be?!?!?!?! I hope he goes back to doing a bit more small scale stuff, because I feel like that's where he shines..
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
